Ales are prodominainantly made using yeasts that fermentate at a higher level then regular yeasts used in Lagers. This allows the beer to contain more flavor, but takes longer to brew. It is also brewed at considerably higher temperatures then lagers would be brewed at.
Since this beer type takes longer to brew, it is much more common for craft beers to be ales. This obviously results in higher prices. You get what you pay for.
The cheaper beers are typically lagers. Cause this type of beer takes much less time to make. Yet, lagers tend to be of lesser quality. Once again. You get what you pay for.
